Mom Can’t Reach 8-Month-Old Baby Caught In Fire With Puppy, Firefighters Reveal What They Find

Erika Poremski was enjoying a quiet evening at home with her adorable baby girl, Viviana, when her world took a dark, unsuspected turn. Erika ran to grab something out of her car – and when she returned, the young mother discovered her house was completely engulfed in flames with her baby and beloved dog, Polo, still trapped inside.

Erika described the horror she felt while struggling to save them with WBAL TV News.

“I just heard her crying and I couldn’t get to her. I tried really hard, everyone in the neighborhood tried. They were kicking the doors in and kicking the windows out. I couldn’t (get her out). Nobody could.”

After several terrifying minutes, firefighters arrived on the scene and rushed in the flaming home to find little Viviana and Polo.

What They Found

When the firefighters busted into the bedroom they made a startling discovery. Viviana was laying underneath Polo’s singed body, who had smartly plopped down on top of her to shield her from the wrath of the flames. Polo’s heroic actions ended up saving Viviana’s life – but he lost his own life in the process. Firefighters subdued the flames and brought Erika’s baby girl out alive.

“She only had burns on her side because of it. He stayed with her the whole time in the bedroom and wouldn’t even come downstairs to get out the door. He was my first baby and now I lost him.
And I’m just praying I don’t lose her. She’s all I have and it just happened so fast, I just don’t understand it.”

Viviana has been under a medically induced coma ever since while she undergoes testing, but thanks to Polo, she only has burns on the side of her body that was barely exposed to the flames.
